Friday Thirty Three

1st Khutba (sermon)

  • In the memory of the birth of Imam Alhussein(p.b.u.h.)
  • The virtues and merits of Imam Alhussein.
  • Poetry is more influential on the soul than prose.
  • Not all poets are followed by those who go astray in evil.

Thanks are due to Allah, the God of all creatures, His favour and His blessings (Salawat) are on Muhammed and his progeny.

“Oye who believe, fear Allah as he should be feared and do not die unless you are Muslims.”

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer: will ye not then abstain? Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and beware (of evil): if ye do turn back, know ye that it is Our Messenger's duty to proclaim (the message) in the clearest manner.( Al-Maeda, the Table Spread, 90-92).

Two or three days ago, we witnessed the annual birth memory of Imam Alhussein (p.b.u.h.); the master of martyrs and the master of the youths of Paradise; accordingly, we'd better mention some of his virtues and merits:

a peasant arrived to Madina and asked about the most generous and kind of its people, so, he was lead to Imam Alhussein Bin Ali Bin Abi Talib (p.b.u.h). So, he entered a mosque and found Imam Alhussein saying his prayers there. The peasant stood before Imam Alhussein and began to recite the following lines:

He who begs your generosity

Shall not be rejected;

For you are a reliable knight;

And a son of he who inflicted

Death on the corrupt with his might;

We would have been buried alive;

But the  generosity of your ancestors;

 made us resurrected.

Imam Alhussein greeted the peasant and said to his page; " Oh! Qanbar ; how much money do we still have from the money of Al-Hijaz? " four thousand gold dinars" replied Qanbar.  Imam Alhussein said to him;" bring them, here comes a man who is more in need of them than we are". Them Imam Alhussein handed the money to the peasant and recited the following lines in reply to the peasant:

Here you are, and accept my apologies;

And you should know that to thee I have pity;

Should we have more in hands!

We would never hesitate to enrich you;

Yet, this is where our hands can reach.

The peasant took the money and began to weep. Imam Alhussein wondered: " is it not enough?" to which the peasant replied;" No! but why should a kind man like you remain bankrupt?"

Here, there are some points we would like to discucss:

  • Imam Alhussein (p.b.u.h.) replied with these lines abruptly without any preparation, unlike the peasant who seems to have prepared his lines before meeting Imam Alhussein. This shows that the infallible Imams can recite poetry and this is also proved in the Diwan (collection) of Imam Ali's poetry in addition to some other clergymen of the progeny of Imam Ali like  AS-Sharif AR-Radhi and AS-Sharif Al-Murtadha; Sheikh Al-Bahaey; Al-Haboby and others. Hence, we take them as an ideal as regards corrective and guiding poetry though our prophet Muhammed didn’t recite poetry as proved by the holy verse " We have not instructed the (Prophet) in Poetry " (Yassin, 69).  Yet, these attributes are confined to the prophet for reasons relevant to his message and the public interest.  Moreover, poetry can be used to fight evil; and not all poetry is included by the holy verse, " And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them” (AS-Shuara, The Poets, 224). What is meant by this verse is that the unjust tyrant people are followed by those who go astray in evil.  Moreover, most of the poetry said by the infallible Imams contains wisdom, preaching, warnings and admonishing and it is certainly more influential on the soul than prose. Besides, a poet can avoid evil and corruption and can control his evil-commanding soul through confining his poetry to glorifying Allah, His messenger and His religion as did the infallible Imams who glorified Almighty Allah and worked to grow the good things for the public:

Poetry is nothing but an overflow of feelings;

The best of which is that through which truth is seen.

  • It is clear that the peasant refers to prophet Muhammed “ your ancestors) as the generous and kind guide without whose guidance people would have been buried in darkness and ignorance and would have remained astray.
  • In another narration about Imam Alhussein is that he was walking once with Anas Bin Malik till they reached the grave of Khadijatul-Kubra (the elder Khadija- peace be upon her) at which he began to weep. Then he asked Anas to leave him alone. Anas says he hid himself and began watching him saying his prayers; after which he began to address Almighty Allah with the following lines:

Oh! Lord! you are my custodian;

So, have mercy on a servant;

Who finds shelter but with thee;

Oh! High above Allah; in thee I seek refuge;

Happy is he whose custodian and lord is thee;

Praise be to him who stays awake;

Complaining to no one but to You, Allah;

Not sick; nor diseased but with thine love;

And when the darkness veils the sky;

His lord answers back his supplication.

So, Imam Alhussein was answered back by Almighty Allah who called addressed him with the following holy lines:

At your demand, my servant;

Whatever you said, We have heard.

The angels miss your voice which is

Enough for us to hear and answer.

Your supplication is secretly kept with us;

And so did we hide it uncovered.

You may ask me without hesitation or fear;

For I am the Almighty Allah.

  • Imam Alhussein(p.b.u.h.) is said to have narrated preaching poetry. The following is a selection from his preaching through poetry:

If this world is held dear and high;

The reward of Allah is highest and dearest;

If the bodies are created to die;

Death with a sword is surely the best;

If bread winning is determined by Allah;

Then man would better accept his lot;

If we are to leave behind all the money we gather;

Then why should we behave like a miser.

And in another lines Imam Alhussein says:

Seek help but with Allah;

You shall be high above all;

And ask Allah for His bounty;

For no one but He, a bestower;

He who seeks richness with people;

Has no trust in his Lord;

And he who thinks himself the actual bread-winner;

Shall slip down a high mountain.

This is because they are not the actual bread-winners, rather, It is Almighty Allah who bestows his bliss and bounty on people; as the holy saying assures:

Among the virtues of Imam Alhussein which are mentioned in Al-Bidaya Wan-Nihaya (Beginning and End) by Ibn Katheer AD-Damashqi, vol.8, page 204:

  • A man asked Abdullah Bin Umar about killing flies to which he replied:” look here! The people of Iraq ask about killing flies at the time they have killed the grandson of the prophet about whom Muhammed (peace be upon him) says: Alhassan and Alhussein are my two blossoms in this world.”
  • Imam Ahmed quoted Abi Hureira saying:” Prophet Muhammed (p.b.u.h.) looked at Imam Ali, Alhassan, Alhussein and Fatima and said,” I wage war against those who are hostile to them and I declare peace to those who are peaceful to them.”
  • Prophet Muhammed (p.b.u.h.) approached us carrying Alhassan on his right shoulder and Alhussein on his left shoulder, kissing them each in turn. We asked our prophet; by God you love them? Our prophet replied, “ He who loves them loves me and he who hates them hates me.”( quoted from Sunun At-Turmudhi(Traditions of Turmudi, vol.2, p.306); Fathul-Qadeer (the Bounty of the Capable), Vol.1, p.148.

  • Anas Bin Malik says:” prophet Muhammed used to pass by Fatima’s house on his way to prayers and starts saying:” come to prayers, Oh Ahlul-Bayt, “And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.(Al-Ahzab, the Clans, 33). (quoted from Sunun At-Turmudhi(Traditions of Turmudi, vol.2, p.29); Sunun Ahmed ibn Hanbal (Traditions of Ahmed Bin Hanbal), Vol.2, p.252, Asadul-Ghaba(Lion of the Forest), Vol.5, p.521); Kanzul-Umal (the Treasures of Employees), Vol.7, p.103; AD-Durul-Manthoor (Scattered Pearls), Vol.6, p.605 (on the explanation of Aya (verse)33 of Al-Ahzab Sura.
  • Yaali Bin Murra quoted the Messenger of Allah saying:” Alhussein is from me and I am from Alhussein; Allah loved him who loves Alhussein”.
  • Abu Naeem quoted Abi saeed Al-Khudari saying” prophet Muhammed says;” Alhssan and Alhussein are the masters of the youths of paradise.”

This sermon ended in An-Nasr (DIVINE SUPPORT)Sura:

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

When comes the Help of Allah, and Victory,

And thou dost see the people enter Allah's Religion in crowds,

Celebrate the praises of thy Lord, and pray for His Forgiveness: For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy).

Friday Thirty Three

2nd Khutba  (sermon)

  • The Virtues of Imam Alhassan and Alhussein.
  • Alhassan and Alhussein are two Imams whether they stand or sit.
  • Meaning of the prophet’s saying.” Alhassan and Alhussein are moy sons whose father is Ali Bin Abi Talib.”
  • The philosophy of their being the masters of the youths of paradise.
  • The meaning of their being custodians.
  • The meaning and philosophy of the prophet’s saying” Alhussein is from me and I am from Alhussein”.
  • The three virtues of Imam Alhussein: being cured by the soil taken from his grave; supplication is answered under his holy shrine; and the nine infallible Imams are his descendents.

Thanks are due to Allah, the God of all creatures, His favour and His blessings (Salawat) are on Muhammed and his progeny.

“Oye who believe, fear Allah as he should be feared and do not die unless you are Muslims.”

Now we shall talk about the virtues of Imam Alhassan and Alhussein with concentration on Imam Alhussein:

  • Prophet Muhammed (May the blessings and favours of Allah be upon him) says: “ Alhassan and Alhussein are actual Imams, whether they stand or sit”. This means that they are actual leaders who shoulder responsibilities. Standing may refer to the revolt of Imam Alhussein against the tyrant Yazid Bin Muawiyah; and sitting may refer to the reconciliation of Imam Alhassan with Muawiyah Bin Abi Sufian. In both these cases, they are Imams who should be followed and obeyed by people.
  • Prophet Muhammed (May the blessings and favours of Allah be upon him) says:” Alhassan and Alhussein are my sons whose father is Ali” in reference to Fatima. Hence, no one can be called as the son of the prophet except Alhassan and Alhussein, as confirmed by the holy verse, “If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!" (Al-Imran, the Family of Imran, 61).
  • Prophet Muhammed says:” Alhassan and Alhussein are the masters of the youths of paradise. This means:

  • They are the masters of all of the youths of paradise. This shows that all the people of paradise return young.
  • They are the highest in rank in heaven; hence, they are the masters of the highest and lowest ranks of heaven with the exception of three only who are higher than them in rank; Muhammed, Ali and Fatima, as confirmed by the holy verse:” In a Garden on high, The Fruits whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near. (Al-Haqqa, the Reality, 22-23). This meaning is inclusive to all people even the pre-Islam prophets, for Alhassan and Alhussein are the masters of all.

  • prophet Muhammed says:” they are two custodians” because custodians are mentioned in the holy Quran.

  • Every prophet has a custodian and Ali is the custodian of prophet Muhammed.
  • Some prophets have custodians, like Abraham, and custodianship is a fine attribute mentioned in the holy Quran. It also means, a son, and this refers to the son of a daughter.
  • Prophet Muhammed says:” Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein” and this has many interpretations:

First, Hussein is from me shows clearly his kinship to the prophet and it also refers to the kinship of Fatima to the prophet (p.b.u.h.).

Second, the prophet being from them means that they are the cause of promoting Islam and the Islamic Sharia and sciences through their Jihad and efforts including Imam Alhussein through his grand sacrifice in Kerbala, without which Islam wouldn’t have been established and fixed. Hence, it is Imam Alhussein who brought Islam and the Sharia of Allah back to life through his self-sacrifice and martyrdom.

  • The most important application of this saying is that the obedience of the messenger of Allah means the obedience of Imam Alhussein, or, the obedience of Imam Alhussein means the obedience of prophet Muhammed and the obedience of Allah.
  • The saying shows the close emotional and blood affinity between the messenger of Allah and between the four Ahlul-Kisaa (people of the Cover), Ali, Fatima, Alhassan and Alhussein.

Among the very special attributes of Imam Alhussein is that Almighty Allah has made him the father of the nine infallible Imams; and that man is cured of his physical and spiritual diseases with the soil of his grave; and that man’s supplication from under his holy shrine is fast answered by Allah, i.e., true and earnest supplication for the hereafter reward and a supplication for worldly desires. These things are rewarded by Allah to Imam Alhussein (p.b.u.h.) against his defence of Islam and against his self-denial, self-sacrifice which is incomparable throughout history.

The sermon ended in Al-Qadir ( the Night of Power) sura:

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

“We have indeed revealed this Quran in the Night of Power; and what will explain to you what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months? There is come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah’s permission, on every errand: peace!... this until the rise of Morn.
